New magazine draft idea

We wanted to try a different image using Aimee as she is the other main character. This magazine design uses an image of Aimee who is the innocent geeky character which is shown by the pastel colours that she is wearing. We used the same text from the original as the picture was very similar. As often when there are two main characters they bring out 2 magazines in the month with different images. However I prefer the other image as it is not so posed and looks less appropriate for a film magazine as it is too glamorous so it is not conventional. ‘Mix Up’ text covers her hand which does not look professional as the text should be further down so it does not cover so much of her body. Furthermore I think that where Amie’s head on the other poster is more appropriate than Aimee as you can make out more of title as it covers two letters. Whereas on this magazine Aimee covers most of one letter.

Editing

1) This shot I edited so that it was slow motion to show her falling over in a funny light which shows
the genre film is teenage comedy. I did this by changing the speed of the shot, so I halved the speed
so that the video is played slower. We then evaluated the video to check that it was the correct
speed and slightly changed it to make it faster or slower. We did this twice in the trailer.

2) To introduce the characters to the audience we wanted their name to appear on the video. So
placed the text over the clip so that both shots are played at the same time. We then moved the
text around the shot to decide the best location where it will stand out. We also changed the colour
and font to add character to the text. The colour we used was red as it is bold and it fits with the
other promotional products as the font colour on some of the magazine was red.

In this section of the trailer we are using fast pace shots between the characters reading the poem.
For this I had to make precise cuts of when to start and finish the shots so that the correct part of
the poem is said.

1) Transition - instead of using fade we decided to use an effect transition which shows a change of
period of time. It also gives the impression to the audience that it is early in the morning so it sets
the time period.

2) For these two videos we wanted to clearly show the storyline of the film so we created a voiceover of what the characters are thinking. As it shows that the characters had swapped bodies. If I
was to create these voiceovers again I would film them again as there is an echo so it does not
sound as realistic.

3)I created a split screen to show the reaction from both characters I created this by placing both
shots above each other on the time line. I then cropped the image so that it only showed the part of
the image I wanted. I then positioned the image so that it was on the correct side of the shot. I then
repeated the process putting image 2 in the blank section next to image 1.

This is the end sequence of the trailer which includes different shots of the characters and text introducing the actresses. We used fades in between the film and the texts as cuts did not work effectively as it was to harsh.
For the title of the film we have decided to use the same process as the other texts except the text moves around as to begin with they are jumbled up and then the letters move to create the correct spelling of the words. We decided to use the same colour and font which is on the poster and magazine, this is so that there is a running theme throughout the promotional package. We decided to change the background from pink like we used in the other text in the trailer as the yellow would not stand out. So instead we used a piece of lined paper as it fits with the main setting of the trailer which is the school and is a plain background so the yellow can be seen clearly. We also added the billing board at the end of the trailer with the information and a website.

Once the trailer was finished we watched it though and decided to take a section of the trailer out. As originally the trailer was over 2 minutes long which when looking at other trailers this was not stereotypical. So to make the trailer more conventional we removed the part of the trailer where the two girls met and blamed each other for what had happened to them. We did this as we believed that it did not fit with the rest of the trailer, as it did not fit the genre of teen comedy because it looked too dramatic as in trailers for this genre they are light hearted and funny . Furthermore the shots and sound was not good quality. In evaluation from removing this section the trailer runs more smoothly and fits the film genre more effectively.

Changes made to poster

After getting feedback from the target audience we made some changes to the poster. The target audience liked the photo used as they thought the image was of good quality and clearly showed the personalities of both characters. Furthermore they also liked the use of cartoons on the poster as they believed it added character and personality to the poster. We then made little changes that they suggested.

1) On the original poster the tagline was ‘who knows if they will ever change back’, but they thought
it could be worded differently so we changed the wording to ‘will they ever change back?’

2) One of the target audience commented on how some of the wing was covered so it made it
unclear of what it was. So I twisted the text and arrow and enlarged the wings so it was clearer and
it fitted around the text.

3) We also changed the wording of the names as originally it said ‘starring…’ but this is not
conventional of posters so we changed it so it was just the names which is more stereotypical.

4) The billing board was also changed to make the wording more conventional as we changed
names and added other production names. Further more we also made the text larger so it was
clearer on the poster.

5) We also added the symbol for the age restriction. We decided on 12A  as the certificate as the
target audience was teenagers and young adults 12- 25. So this certificate means that  it can contain
strong language, sex reference, violence and soft drugs which are themes that could be referenced
to in the film.

Promotional package

The products we have created work together effectively as we have kept some elements the same throughout:
  • Text: the text used to create the title is the same for each product as we have used the same colour and fonts. We did this as we believed that it represents the genre of film we wanted to portray which is a comedy, fantasy film. To make the text look different for each product we have used different backgrounds and different effects to make the text more creative.
  • Amie has been represented in every product which shows that she is one of the main character and the more famous actress than other actors in the film. The characteristics of this character is shown clearly in each product as we have represented her in stereotypical costume and make up. This is so her personality is clearly shown and can be easily identifiable. Furthermore Amie was used as her character will probably be more liked by the audience than the other characters.
  • We have tried to give impression of a indie type design which is used in films like 500 days of Summer and Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging. We have creatively incorporated this into the design by using hand drawn cartoons (poster and magazine) and the text which has been used which makes the font design looks almost cartoon like.

Filming session 4

Date: 15th January
Location: School

We did the final parts of filming at school when the girls had their different personalities to show that the change had occur. For this filming we had to make sure that the costumes and makeup were bold and were conventional for their type of character.  As  Aimee had to be dressed as popular with the same characteristics as Amie. So she applied thick eyeliner and wore a leather jacket which Amie originally wore in the beginning of the trailer.  Whereas Amie wore jeans and a jumper which was very simple to fit the conventions . Also they acted in a stereotypical manner so that the difference in the characters was clear to everyone.

The settings of the filming was in a corridor and in a classroom as we wanted to film them individually walking down a corridor and working together in a classroom. This is the filming which will draw the trailer to an end as we want the main plot of the film to be clear and easily identifiable to anyone watching.

Conventions
We have used the conventions of the genre of the film as we have tried to use conventional shots like close ups, mid shots, two person shots. Which are stereotypical of teenage comedy as it is normally the characters which make trailer funny and the audience want to see the film as they show main characters and actors which are going to be in the film and a introduction to the storyline.

Filming session 3

Date: 5th February
Location: Amie’s house

In the third filming session we filmed at Amie’s house to film the parts of the poem that she was reading, again we tried a range of  different shots including the angle for the split screen. When editing the filming we found out that the split screen of both girls saying the ending of the poem at the same time did not work. As they were not in sync so it was unclear what they were saying.  We decided to just have Amie saying the end of the poem. We also filmed Amie getting out of bed and her screaming while looking in the mirror. For these shots the angle of filming was very important as the sunlight coming through the curtains caused the person to be unclear. Also for the angle when filming Amie in the mirror we had to make sure that person filming was not shown.  We also filmed different shots of Amie  and Aimee doing different activities together, they were of them coming home from shopping , doing homework and Amie trying to smoke but choking. We did this to show how they become friends and support each other to experience new experiences.

Filming session 2

Date: 18th January
Location: Maxine’s house

In the second filming session we went off site to Maxine's house to film Aimee getting out of bed, reading the poem, and Aimee and Amie talking at the door. Before filming we made sure that  she had the correct costume which was  pyjamas  and normal clothing.

When filming Aimee reading the poem we tried a range of different shots from different angles. We tried angles from the side, behind Aimee looking at the computer screen, we also tried filming Aimee as if the camera was the computer  which would be able to be used for a split screen.

For the other parts of filming again we tried different shots so that when editing we had different options which we could use for that part of the trailer.

When filming Amie outside and using the front door as she walked into the house we had to make sure that continuity was kept throughout the sequence, so when editing it would look continuous. This happened so we did not need to film anything again. However when filming outside there was a lot of background noise from a busy road in front of the house. So when editing I had to edit the volume of the cars so that they were quitter and less noticeable. I also edited the sound from some of the other shots that had dialogue of Aimee so it was louder and clearer. This all happened after evaluating the filming and playing music against the trailer.

Although when filming at certain times there was lots of background noise as there was building works and a dog barking but when re- watching the filming it was not affected.

Filming session 1

 Date: 15th January
Location: School
We filmed Amie walking down a corridor which was the  part of the trailer that introduced her character. The setting of the corridor was perfect as it showed that the character was in a school and was good lighting with no background noises. After filming the scene we uploaded it onto computer which allowed us to see there was a continuity error as we shot Amie doing the same thing in different angles and shots. However the shots did not fit together, as the person filming moved so they were in slightly different positions so it did not look continuous. After evaluating the shots we decided that we would re- film it so it would be of better quality.
We also filmed Aimee being slammed against the lockers by Amie, again we filmed this twice as on the first take the camera slightly moved so we filmed it again. The second time went well and to make sure that the filming was continuous we filmed Aimee dropping to the floor I then stopped the camera while Aimee stayed still so that I could change position to film the second part of the scene. This worked well as it made sure that it looked realistic as the position on the floor was exactly where she fell.
We also filmed Aimee in a lesson and Amie getting results of a test, we again did multiple shots at different angles all was appropriate and worked well however when editing we cut out certain parts of the filming as the shots were too long or the ending / beginning was not appropriate.
